CVC Fabric and DTF: Managing Dye Migration on 60/40 Blends

CVC (chief value cotton) blends sit around 60% cotton and 40% polyester, putting the poly content high enough to cause visible dye migration in light-color prints at standard DTF temperatures if you skip the right preparation.

What CVC Fabric Is

CVC stands for chief value cotton, a designation that means the blend is majority cotton by weight. In practice, most CVC tees run 60% cotton and 40% polyester. The polyester adds stretch recovery, reduces shrinkage, and gives the fabric a slightly silkier hand feel than 100% cotton.

Popular CVC blanks include the Next Level 6210 (4.5oz 60/40), certain Hanes and Jerzees styles, and various mid-range performance tees. The blend ratio is always printed on the label. Anything 35% poly and above warrants dye migration precautions for light-color DTF prints.

The Migration Risk at 40% Poly

At 40% polyester, dye migration is a real risk on white, cream, light gray, and pastel colorways when pressing at standard cotton temperatures (315°F). The poly component releases disperse dye under sustained heat. On dark CVC colorways, this effect is invisible. On light colorways, it appears as a pinkish or yellowish tint in white areas of the print after 5-15 washes.

The migration does not happen instantly. It is a cumulative wash-cycle effect. A print that looks perfect on press day will start showing cast after repeated laundry cycles as the released dye molecules work through the adhesive and into the ink film over time.

Solutions: Lower Temperature and Poly Blocker

For light-color CVC garments, use both strategies together. Drop the press temperature to 295-305°F and extend dwell time to 16 seconds to compensate. Lower temperature reduces the rate of dye release from the poly fibers. This alone reduces migration risk by 60-70% on most CVC fabrics.

Apply poly blocker to the print area before pressing and allow it to fully dry. The blocker creates a barrier at the fiber surface that prevents migrating dye molecules from reaching the adhesive layer. Combined with the reduced temperature, you have a durable barrier against visible migration on most CVC styles.

Settings Summary for CVC

Dark CVC colorways: 315°F, 15 seconds, medium pressure. No poly blocker needed. Dark colors mask any migration that does occur.

Light CVC colorways (white, cream, light gray, pastels): 295-305°F, 16 seconds, medium pressure. Apply poly blocker and allow to dry before pressing. Cold peel after 25 seconds.

  • Dark CVC: standard cotton settings, no poly blocker needed.
  • Light CVC: 295-305°F / 16s / medium pressure plus poly blocker.
  • Always let poly blocker dry fully before pressing (20-40 seconds).
  • Test one garment from every new CVC batch before production runs.
