DTF vs DTG: Which One Survives Wash Fifty

Both look great out of the press. The question is what the shirt looks like after your customer has run it through the machine every week for a year. Here is the answer.

What This Is

The short version, from the production floor.

DTG jets pigment ink straight onto the shirt like a big desktop printer. On white cotton it is fast, soft, and photographic. On dark cotton it needs pretreatment, a white ink underbase, and a longer cure. On polyester it is a bad tool.

DTF prints on film first, then presses onto the shirt with a polyamide hot melt adhesive that bonds into the fiber. Same white underbase, but generated at RIP and printed under the color layer. No pretreatment. No cure oven. Just press and peel.

Wash durability is where the argument ends. DTG on properly pretreated cotton is durable if everything upstream was right. DTF is durable regardless of who pressed it, because the bond chemistry is baked in before the transfer ships. That consistency is why print shops that swore by DTG for retail on-demand now run DTF for wholesale short runs.

The other split is substrate. DTG is a cotton tool. Anything above fifty percent polyester and the ink hooks weakly and washes off. DTF bonds to cotton, poly, blends, fleece, and canvas at the same quality level. If your job list has mixed substrates in one week, this is not a close comparison.

    Kids apparel programs where soft hand feel matters and the substrate is guaranteed cotton. DTG is still worth running there.
